South Africa: Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager secures three-year safety permit

Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) has been granted a three-year safety permit by South Africa's Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), following an evaluation of its safety management systems, governance, risk management processes, and control mechanisms across the national rail network, according to a Transnet statement reported on Monday by SAnews.gov.za. This permit marks a progression from the initial temporary permit phase, during which TRIM strengthened its safety systems and institutional frameworks. "The three-year permit represents significant progress, but TRIM recognizes that rail safety requires continuous improvement," Transnet stated, adding that the organization will continue to strengthen its systems and its coordination with the RSR and operators. The renewal comes as South Africa's rail freight transitions to an open, multi-operator model, with the arrival of new Train Operating Companies (TOC) on the network. TRIM must ensure fair and non-discriminatory access while preserving infrastructure integrity; managing safety interfaces with operators is becoming a central challenge of this transition.
