South Africa: Western Cape assesses flood damage to Klawer water infrastructure
The Krans Bridge siphon, near Klawer in South Africa's Western Cape province, was severely damaged by floods in May 2026, as floodwaters and debris dislodged the steel pipeline from its support structures. Provincial MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, visited the site alongside representatives from the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Lower Olifants River Water User Association, local authorities, and technical experts, according to SAnews.gov.za. This siphon is part of the regional bulk water supply network serving Vredendal, Klawer, Vanrhynsdorp, Lutzville, and Koekenaap, as well as agricultural and industrial users in the Lower Olifants region. "This infrastructure is of strategic importance to the communities, the agricultural sector, and the industries that rely on a safe and reliable water supply," Anton Bredell stated. The Department of Local Government will coordinate efforts among national, provincial, and local institutions, without replacing the technical responsibilities of the infrastructure owners. This incident illustrates the growing vulnerability of South Africa's water networks to extreme weather events.
