Nigerian President advocates for an end to African raw cocoa exports
The Nigerian President has called for local processing of cocoa rather than exporting it in its raw state, Sputnik Africa reports. Africa produces around 70% of the world's cocoa but reportedly captures only 6 cents per dollar generated by the chocolate industry, with most of the added value captured outside the continent. On July 14, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon signed the Abuja Declaration, creating an alliance aimed at promoting the local processing of African cocoa.
