Uganda: Old Mutual donates vital neonatal equipment to Kajjansi health center
In Uganda, maternal and neonatal mortality remains a major health challenge, particularly in peripheral health centers often ill-equipped to handle neonatal respiratory emergencies. This is the context behind the donation announced by Old Mutual Insurance Uganda to the Kajjansi Health Centre IV. According to Nile Post, the insurer handed over a mixed continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device, used to assist the breathing of distressed newborns, as well as a radiant warmer designed to stabilize the body temperature of fragile babies. This donation is part of the Mama Toto Care Uganda program, an initiative aimed at strengthening maternal and neonatal health services in the country. The source specifies neither the investment amount nor the number of facilities that have already benefited from the program. For families served by this health center, this equipment can mean the difference between life and death during the critical first hours following a high-risk birth. For Old Mutual, this action is part of a corporate social responsibility strategy, common among insurers operating in growing African markets. This initiative illustrates a regional trend where the private sector, particularly financial and insurance institutions, is filling certain gaps in public health infrastructure. It remains to be seen whether this donation is accompanied by training for medical staff and maintenance monitoring, essential elements
