South Africa: Green Hydrogen as the Pillar of Pretoria's New Industrial Strategy
The South Africa Green Hydrogen Fund closed a first tranche of 3 billion rands in August, anchored by the European Commission through its Global Gateway, announced South African Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau on Tuesday at the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, according to SAnews.gov.za. The Global Gateway is adding 628 million rands in grants: 490 million for hydrogen infrastructure, expected to mobilize an additional 10 billion rands, and 138 million to green Transnet. Germany is contributing 40 million euros via KfW, as part of the JET-IP managed by the Industrial Development Corporation, which has identified 24 strategic projects. The dtic is also supporting Hive Hydrogen, developer of the Coega Green Ammonia project, whose financial due diligence is unlocking 12.5 million rands out of a planned 25 million. "We must export more value and less raw potential. We must move up the value chain and become producers, not mere resource suppliers," Parks Tau stated. The minister mentioned tens of thousands of jobs and billions of rands in economic activity, calling for regional cooperation through the Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance. Sankofa Insight — Transforming hydrogen into ammonia before export only equates to industrial sovereignty if the capital and added value remain predominantly South African. A project financed by foreign development banks remains a step toward industrialization, not its culmination.
