Uganda: NCBA Bank accelerates its digital banking push
Uganda's banking sector is undergoing an accelerated digital transition, driven by high mobile money penetration (MTN, Airtel) and a growing demand for remote financial services, particularly for SMEs often underserved by traditional branches. It is in this context that NCBA Bank Uganda, the local subsidiary of Kenya's NCBA Group, has announced the launch of two digital banking platforms targeting individuals and businesses. According to an analysis published by The Independent (Kampala) and relayed by AllAfrica on July 29, 2026, these tools aim to transform access to and management of financial services. However, the source dispatch remains very concise: it specifies neither the names of the platforms, nor their exact launch date, nor any quotes from bank executives, details that remain to be confirmed. An For Ugandan customers, this push promises easier access to accounts, credit, and payments without visiting branches. For NCBA, the challenge is to defend its market share against competitors (Stanbic, Equity, Absa) who are also investing heavily in digital. This announcement is part of the regional strategy of NCBA Group, born from the CBA-NIC Bank merger in Kenya in 2019, where digital (M-Shwari, Fuliza) is central. It remains to be seen whether the Ugandan rollout will rely on a partnership with local telecoms, often considered a key to success in East Africa.
