Liberia: Government launches five-day working session to prepare 2027 budget
Every year, Liberia initiates a budget preparation cycle involving sector ministries several months ahead of the parliamentary vote. Since 2024, President Joseph Boakai has made the ARREST Agenda (Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, Tourism) the official framework for the country's inclusive development. It is against this backdrop that the Governance Commission opened a five-day Budget Sector Working Group session on August 5, 2026, in Monrovia, according to the New Dawn as reported by AllAfrica. The stated objective is to align the 2027 national budget with the priorities of the ARREST Agenda. The source dispatch does not specify the planned amount, sector allocations, or the subsequent parliamentary calendar. This is a central issue for the Liberian state, whose public resources remain limited and dependent on foreign aid and raw material exports (rubber, iron ore). Effective alignment between the political agenda and budget allocations will condition the credibility of commitments made to citizens regarding infrastructure and social services. It remains to be seen whether this technical work will translate into concrete and transparent budgetary choices, an open question until the draft budget is published.
