South Africa: Xiaomi advocates for corporate entry into university lecture halls on the sidelines of the Shanghai forum
Xiaomi hired approximately 3,700 hardware professionals in 2026 and 15,000 employees over the past three years in IT, electronics, mechanics, materials, and automotive engineering. Wang Dong, vice president of human resources for the Chinese group, shared these figures during the Science and Technology Policy Thematic Forum held at the Dongjiao State Hotel in Shanghai on September 12, 2026, the second day of the Pujiang Innovation Forum which opened on September 11, according to SAnews.gov.za. South Africa is participating as the first African country designated as Guest Country of Honor. "Enterprises are not mere users of talent; they must become active participants in the educational system," Wang stated. Xiaomi has translated its industrial experience into university courses, covering 15 partner institutions, over 6,000 enrollments, 4,000 students trained, and more than 100 job offers. South African Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Blade Nzimande announced strengthened cooperation with China on AI, joint research centers, quantum computing, and cybersecurity. Department Director-General Mlungisi Cele expressed希望 that Pretoria would draw inspiration from the Chinese model linking research, industry, and private investment. For South Africa, this partnership could accelerate the transfer of technological skills to its university and industrial ecosystem, which is still under development compared to Asian standards. This move is part of China's strategy for technological projection toward Africa, as Beijing seeks drivers for industrial growth in the face of slowing domestic demand, while Pretoria relies on these alliances to bridge its research funding deficit and modernize its productive apparatus.
