Burkina Faso: 99.99% purity gold refinery inaugurated, trade surplus reaches 2320 milliards FCFA

Burkina Faso recently inaugurated a gold refinery equipped with an automated extraction system capable of producing 99.99% pure metal, according to the RTB 8 PM news. The head of state emphasized that this facility reflects the country's determination to go beyond merely extracting its natural resources and master the entire value chain up to refining. In the first half of 2026, the country posted a trade surplus, with 4644 milliards de francs CFA in exports against 2323 milliards in imports, representing a surplus of 2320 milliards de francs CFA. Gold accounts for about 90% of Burkinabe exports, with prices reaching nearly 5000 dollars in 2025-2026. Reforms in the mining sector have allowed the state to better assert its sovereignty over natural resources, while improved security has fostered the resumption of industrial and mining activities. Additionally, a partnership framework between Burkina Faso and the Banque mondiale was launched for the 2026-2031 period, focusing on agriculture, energy, education, and health; the precise project schedule and funders were not detailed. This surplus has led to higher public revenues, used to boost social investments and cushion cost-of-living shocks.
