Ces opérations disent où va l'argent patient : énergie, banques, agro-industrie, télécoms. Une entreprise financée par l'IFC ou Proparco publie ses engagements environnementaux et sociaux — utile pour un futur salarié ou fournisseur.

Périmètre et limites — toute la vérité

Les investissements privés purement commerciaux (une usine construite sur fonds propres, un rachat entre groupes) ne sont recensés dans aucune base gratuite et vérifiable ; les bases qui les suivent sont payantes. Ce classement couvre donc les investissements co-financés par les institutions de développement — une part importante, mais pas la totalité, de l'investissement privé. Dans la norme IATI, pour ces pays, on retrouve l'IFC, FMO, la BERD et PIDG, ainsi que les opérations non souveraines repérables de la BAD, de la BEI et de l'AFD ; Proparco, BII, DEG et Norfund n'y publient pas d'opérations exploitables par pays. Les programmes multi-pays sont comptés au prorata déclaré pour le pays (part affichée) ; un programme régional déclaré à 100 % sur un pays est signalé « régional ». Les montants manifestement incohérents à la source (par exemple des lignes de garantie commerciale déclarées à 7 milliards de dollars dans chaque pays) sont conservés mais signalés « à vérifier » et exclus du classement.
