Nigeria: Access Holdings boosts green assets to $67.7 million in 2025
Access Holdings Plc increased its green assets to $67.7 million during the 2025 fiscal year, according to figures reported by Financial Afrik. The Nigerian holding company, created from the restructuring of Access Bank Plc effective since 2022, ranks among the largest pan-African banking groups, with subsidiaries in Ghana, Kenya, DR Congo, Zambia, Mozambique, and South Africa, as well as in the United Kingdom and France. The group is led by Roosevelt Ogbonna, Group CEO of Access Bank since the passing of its founder Herbert Wigwe in a helicopter crash in February 2024. For several years, Access Bank has forged multiple partnerships with development finance institutions, including the IFC and British International Investment, to support renewable energy and climate finance projects in Africa. The exact nature of the green assets recorded in 2025 and the baseline figure from the previous fiscal year were not specified. This growth strengthens the group's environmental and social profile among international lenders, at a time when access to concessional financing lines increasingly depends on the climate commitments displayed by African banks. This green portfolio expansion aligns with the regional diversification strategy undertaken by Access Holdings since its transformation into a holding structure. It comes as capital flows toward climate finance in emerging markets remain sensitive to Western interest rates and the volatility of the naira, the Nigerian currency having experienced several devaluations since 2023.
