AUDA-NEPAD launches a program for African island economies

The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) has announced the launch of a five-year program dedicated to the continent's island economies. This initiative comes as African small island states, often reliant on tourism, fishing, and imports, are among the territories most exposed to climate change—rising sea levels, cyclones, coastal erosion—while remaining marginalized in intra-African trade, hindered by geographic isolation and limited transport infrastructure. According to African Business, this five-year framework aims to support seven island nations in climate adaptation, trade and transport enhancement, and the building of stronger economic ties. The very brief dispatch specifies neither the countries involved, the funding mobilized, nor the associated partners—leaving many questions open. For these micro-states, such a framework could facilitate access to climate finance and their integration into the AfCFTA, which is complex for small-scale economies. Structurally, these countries share vulnerabilities: narrow markets, import dependency, and fiscal vulnerability. The launch comes as global climate finance remains a major diplomatic issue for small island states, which have been demanding priority access to it for years.
