Seychelles: President Herminie Seeks Diaspora Expertise in Durban for National Development
Seychellois President Patrick Herminie met with members of the Seychellois diaspora in Durban, South Africa, on the first day of his visit to the country. He was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Ambassador Barry Faure, the Chief of Staff of the Presidency, Jeniffer Vel, and the Acting High Commissioner of Seychelles to South Africa, Véronique Morel, according to a press release distributed by APO Group on behalf of State House Seychelles. The Head of State recalled that the importance placed on the diaspora is reflected in the existence of a ministry dedicated to Foreign Affairs and Diaspora. Engaging directly with participants, he noted various professional backgrounds -- business, education, health, tourism -- several corresponding to high-demand sectors in Seychelles. He committed to establishing concrete mechanisms to mobilize this expertise for the country's development. "The time of animosity is over," he stated, affirming that Seychelles needs all its nationals and mentioning measures taken to restore peace and national unity. For the diaspora, this commitment paves the way for mechanisms to channel expertise back into sectors facing local skills shortages, notably health and tourism, a historical pillar of the Seychellois economy. This gesture comes against a backdrop of internal political reconciliation mentioned by the President himself, while the Seychellois economy, heavily dependent on tourism and external financial flows, seeks to diversify its human resources in the face of a small population and persistent skilled emigration to South Africa, Europe, and the Gulf.
