Benin: Ten new vocational tracks to open for the 2026-2027 academic year
The Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche Scientifique, in charge of Technical Training, has announced the opening of ten new vocational training tracks in the Lycées Techniques Professionnels in Benin for the 2026-2027 school year, according to a press release relayed by Africa Newsroom (APO). These courses, leading to the Diplôme de Technicien aux Métiers (DTM), cover electricity, renewable energies, refrigeration and air conditioning, electronic maintenance with a multimedia option, computer networks and security, passenger car maintenance, general construction, surveying, and building design engineering. Each track leads to specific professions: electrical installation and home automation technician, photovoltaic and thermal solar system installer, refrigeration technician, network technician, automotive mechanic, general construction crew leader, or building estimator and draftsperson. The ministry systematically mentions entrepreneurship as a potential career path, particularly the creation of garages, construction companies, or digital service firms. The concerned institutions and precise registration procedures have not been detailed. For young Beninese, these tracks offer an alternative professional pathway to high-potential sectors: construction, solar energy, and digital technology. This initiative aligns with the government's drive to better align training with employment, as Benin continues its investments in solar electrification and digital infrastructure. It joins a regional West African trend of technical education reform, supported by donors such as the World Bank, to address youth unemployment and the growing needs of the construction and renewable energy sectors on the continent.
