Rwanda: Inflation hits 14.5% year-on-year in July 2026
Rwandan inflation reached 14.5% year-on-year in July 2026, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR). The NISR attributes this increase to rising transport, housing, food, and energy prices. The institute specifies that "the urban Consumer Price Index (CPI), used as the main benchmark for monetary policy, rose by 0.9% month-on-month." This level of inflation, well above the 2% to 8% target range generally set by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) to guide its monetary policy, erodes the purchasing power of urban households and complicates rate decisions for the central bank, which relies on the urban CPI as its benchmark. This inflationary surge combines domestic factors—rising housing and transport costs in a rapidly urbanizing country—and external pressures related to energy and imported foodstuffs, against a backdrop where several economies in the East African Community are facing high inflation. The BNR will have to balance supporting historically robust Rwandan growth with monetary tightening to contain prices.
