Botswana: A new child protection call center inaugurated in Gaborone for 1.1 million pula

Botswana, an upper-middle-income country in Southern Africa whose economy remains dependent on diamonds, is gradually investing in its social infrastructure as its capital Gaborone becomes denser and the need for child protection becomes more visible. It is against this backdrop that Child Helpline Botswana inaugurated, according to the Botswana Daily News (July 28, 2026), a new "state-of-the-art" call center worth 1.1 million pula in Gaborone. The very concise source dispatch does not specify the number of lines or jobs created, nor the identity of the officials or funders (State, international partners, NGOs), as no official quotes are reported. For vulnerable children, families, and social workers, such a facility is intended in principle to improve responsiveness to reports of abuse or distress. From an analytical perspective, this investment is part of a regional trend where several African countries are strengthening their child emergency systems, often in connection with the international network Child Helpline International. An open question remains: what is the exact source of funding and the real operational capacity of this center, elements that the dispatch does not allow to be verified.
