SADC: Seychellois President Herminie Calls for Africa-Led Industrial Transformation at 46th Summit
On August 17, 2026, Seychellois President Patrick Herminie delivered his inaugural address to the heads of state and government gathered for the official opening ceremony of the 46th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), bringing together the 16 member states of the regional bloc. According to Africa Newsroom (APO), citing an official communication from State House Seychelles, the head of state urged the region to seize what he termed "Africa's moment" to turn the continent's resources into shared prosperity. The summit was held under the theme of resilience and sustainable, inclusive industrialization, driven by infrastructure development, agricultural transformation, and the responsible valorization of critical minerals. President Herminie stated that the previous generation secured political liberation and laid the foundations for regional cooperation, and that the current generation must convert this potential into tangible prosperity. As an island nation, he recalled, the Seychelles directly feel global shocks through the cost of food, fuel, and essential goods, as well as pressure on their tourism-dependent economy.
