Nigeria: 600 million naira needed to restore vandalized electricity in Abaji
Abaji, one of the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria, has been left without part of its electrical grid following acts of vandalism on power supply infrastructure. This type of incident, which is recurrent in Nigeria where copper cable theft and transformer destruction regularly affect the supply, adds to an already existing national power crisis marked by frequent grid collapses and insufficient production to meet demand. The chairman of the Abaji area council, Hon. Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, stated that approximately 600 million naira is needed to repair the damaged facilities and restore power to the area. For the residents and merchants of Abaji, this prolonged outage means the halt of activities dependent on electricity -- small businesses, food preservation, crafts -- with a direct local economic impact until funds are mobilized. This incident illustrates a structural problem in Nigeria's power sector: the mismatch between emergency repair needs and the limited financial capacities of local administrations, which often rely on federal government assistance or the FCT administration to finance this type of reconstruction. The issue of physical security for infrastructure, a recurring target of theft and sabotage, remains unresolved without any sustainable solution identified at this stage.
